Dauntsey Lock and Monbulk Creek went to their first exhibition in three years, the AMRE show in Adelaide. They will also appear at the AMRA exhibition in Melbourne this August. The last couple of months have been spent preparing for these instead of working on Penzance, so I should be able to get back to working on the new one now.
The 1:220 scale experiments are complete for now, with the G42 Garratt properly articulated and running, as well as versions of the NBH and NBHC carriages. They all run, so this scale and prototype is definitely an option for a future layout.
It has been a while since I have built any new trains, so here is the first of a few planned experiments: scaling up the Victorian Railways narrow gauge stock by 60% from 1:350 to 1:220 (Zn30). A few extra details on the 3D prints, a quick paint job, and they look reasonable. They do run, but this is about the maximum practicable size for the linear motor drive.
The trees are finally starting to sprout on the layout. I came across a cheap plastic tree on Ebay that can be adapted into acceptable model gum trees. About half the trees are now built and planted. The remainder, including tree-ferns and European types, are in the pipeline.
The layout is new almost complete - just waiting for the trees and backscene. The full complement of rolling stock is now built, painted and tested. At exhibitions, the plan is to run three typical trains: a long one hauled by the Garratt, a medium train hauled by one or two NAs, and a fire patrol trolley.
The rail linear motor test track is now evolving into a small micro-layout. The Monbulk Creek trestle bridge is a popular viewing spot on Puffing Billy, a 2'6" gauge tourist railway on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia.
The scenic base is now in place, so time for the detailing, correct trains, and trees. Lots of gum trees. |
